Caring for mother and baby, from pregnancy through delivery

Our Maternity & Nursery department supports mothers in Chuka and the wider Tharaka-Nithi community through pregnancy, delivery and the earliest days of a newborn's life.

Midwives and nurses provide antenatal care, skilled attendance at delivery, and postnatal support, working closely with our Theatre for caesarean sections when they are needed.

What We Offer

From antenatal visits to postnatal recovery

    • Antenatal care (ANC) with routine antenatal profile testing
    • Skilled attendance at normal (spontaneous vaginal) delivery
    • Assisted delivery and caesarean section, via our Theatre, when needed
    • Postnatal care and recovery support for mothers
    • Nursery care for newborns immediately after birth, including low-birth-weight babies
    • Tetanus toxoid and other maternal immunizations
    • Family planning and postnatal counselling
Midwifery and nursing team

Part of the hospital's nursing and midwifery team.

A team present through labour and beyond

Our midwives and nurses stay with mothers through labour, delivery and recovery, and hand over newborns to the nursery team for the checks every baby needs in its first hours.

What to expect at a Level 4B hospital

Normal and moderately complicated deliveries, including caesarean section, are managed here. The most complex obstetric emergencies are stabilised and referred to a Level 5 hospital, in line with our Level 4B scope of service.
